Dog and cat heart disease

Evaluation of screening tests:
• During the screening tests, one ml of blood is taken from the animal, from which the so-called KNOTT test and the ELISA antigen test are also performed.
• If either test is positive, your animal is not yet certain to have heartworms, further tests are needed to prove it.
• If both tests are positive, your dog is most likely to have heartworms.
Evaluation of the rapid test (ELISA-serological test): if positive, then unfortunately heartworm disease is suspected. In this case, it is advisable to have an additional test, the PCR test, performed, which will clarify the result. If the serology test is positive, but the knott test is negative, then occult heartworm disease is suspected (i.e. there is probably a worm, but it is not multiplying). In this case, the PCR test does not make much sense (because it tests the DNA of the microfilariae, see later), so in this case, the test is repeated with a test from another manufacturer. If the additional tests are also positive, then unfortunately the dog has heartworm…
That is, it is very likely not infected. But the ELISA rapid test (which was positive) must be repeated to be sure of its exclusion.

First step: determining the ideal body weight

Second step: reducing calorie intake
As I have already mentioned, it is not enough to simply give less of the previous diet. You need to reduce the calorie intake in a way that the dog still receives the vital amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. So, first, you need to write down what the dog eats, including snacks, treats, and begging (this will also help you assess what caused it to gain most of its fat mass), and then you need to calculate how many calories it consumes per day.
The amount of reduction is relatively easy to calculate for dogs whose weight has stabilized at a certain level. In this case, you need to reduce the calories consumed by 20% as a starting point.
Another method is to determine the so-called resting energy requirement (RER). RER is the amount of energy required for the body's basic functions (e.g. brain and heart function). This is not the same as the so-called metabolizable energy requirement, abbreviated as MER.
Calculation: RER = 70*ideal BW0.75 (kcal/day).
Even with minimal excess weight, weight loss can be initiated if you receive a calorie amount corresponding to your RER.
In case of greater weight gain: as a starting point, we determine the daily energy intake at 80% of the RER amount, this is usually effective and is still well tolerated by dogs.
Third step: Composing the diet
The point in summary: high protein, moderate fat, low fiber and minimal CH intake.

A good diet for weight loss has a fiber content of less than 5%. Fiber is nothing more than indigestible CH, too much of which can impair the absorption of nutrients, and the dog does not feel full from it.
It is a common misconception that a large portion of low-calorie vegetables will fill the dog's stomach, so it will not be hungry. However, to drive away the feeling of hunger, it is not ballast that is needed, but some fat and a large portion of protein.
When calculating the amount of calories consumed, always include the amount of regular daily reward snacks, the amount of which should not exceed 10% of the daily calorie intake.
Step Four: Determining the Number of Feedings
A sudden reduction in the amount of food will upset the dog, making him constantly hungry, and we can't stand to see him suffer, and we've already started a diet. Be careful not to overload joints that may already be painful, but dogs with arthritis also need exercise! Exercise not only burns more calories, the strengthened muscles also increase the stability of the joints. If you can, let them swim, which is gentle on the joints.
